There are several diagrams that explore the significance of the eight-point star, or khatam, in Islamic art. In this sketch, I was inspired by the most famous example, drawn by the 12th-century Sufi philosopher Ibn Arabi. The symbol of the eight-point star is universally known for its balance and harmony.
