Despite being an important member of the group of 20th-century Franco-Chinese artists who left their homes to pursue their careers in Paris, Lalan remains less familiar to the public than many of her contemporaries, such as Sanyu, Lin Fengmian, and her first husband, Zao Wou-ki. Born in 1921 in Guizhou, Xie Jinglan (nicknamed Lanlan, which morphed into Lalan) created an expansive oeuvre that spanned abstract painting…
