Subodh Gupta's art has regularly been hailed as an eloquent paean to the inconspicuous objects—and, through these, the actions and actors—that constitute a "real," often rural, India. On occasion, his work is also positioned as a challenge to society's totemization of these selfsame objects, coming as it does with sardonic titles that undermine their supposed authority and authenticity.
