Auction Report

Ups and Downs

Compared with the robust overall sales at Sotheby’s and Christie’s in March at their local outposts, subsequent modern and contemporary art sales in London and Hong Kong showed less even results, with eye-popping record-breakers combined with surprising underperformers.

On April 24, Sotheby’s London launched its Orientalist and Middle East Week, a series of sales comprising antiquities, rugs and carpets, as well as fine art. Taking up 14.5 percent of the series total, the 60-lot 20th Century Art / Middle East sale gathered a modest GBP 2.14 million (USD 2.86 million).
