Minimalist porcelain works express the fragility of life

In May, I found myself in Taopu, Shanghai, northwest of the city’s financial center at an enclave of factory units that were repurposed as artist studios several years ago. Ceramics artist Liu Jianhua moved here from Jiangnan in 2011, and occupies an 800-square-meter studio—formerly the site of the Phoenix Quilt Company—set among neat tree-lined lanes.
