When Faiza Butt and I met at her London studio in mid-June, she showed me her latest pieces featuring her family: large ceramic bowls with black-and-white-painted images of her daughter holding forth on feminism, and depictions of her son—a keen skateboarder—midleap. Indeed, her children provided inspiration for the bulk of her work in an upcoming solo exhibition at London’s Grosvenor Gallery in October. However, this source of motivation was once an inhibition.
