Naoyuki Tsuji’s prolific animation career transcends the boundary between film and fine art. The Yokohama-based artist’s early projects include surreal puppet animations and ink drawings, while in his most recent drawings Tsuji uses a prosaic, almost childlike technique, creating a surreal world with hints of folklore and dark fairy tales.

Tsuji uses charcoal to narrate these stories, erasing each image and re-drawing on top, leaving an afterimage and a faint gray…
