In terms of formal genealogy, it is hard to read Guy Ben-Ner’s abundant visual aesthetic as directly descended from Buky Schwartz’s minimalism. Schwartz, a sculptor born in 1932, was one of the first Israeli artists to explore video. His late-1970s “Videoconstructions” are austere conceptual works, concerned with perception and with the exposure of visual preconceptions about materials and spatial relationships.
