That the first magazine devoted to contemporary Asian and Pacific art was founded in Australia in the early 1990s may seem accidental—but in fact was inevitable. The very term “Asia and Pacific” belonged to a long-held Australian ambition to close the psychological distance from our nearest neighbors through cultural exchange. When the political moment arrived in the election of the visionary prime minister Paul Keating, the Australian cultural bureaucracy was more than ready.
