Up-and-coming artist Kazz Sasaguchi is known for his highly conceptual, elaborately produced works that challenge prevailing systems of thought. His latest solo exhibition, “White,” at the young Tokyo gallery Zenshi, proved to be no exception.

At first, Sasaguchi’s work appears typically minimalist: white rectangle paintings in white frames hung on white walls. But looking closer one discovers engravings on the frames’ Plexiglas covers, which cast silhouettes of lines, dots or characters…
