The division of the British Raj into two separate states in 1947 when the colonial power relinquished governance of the Subcontinent remains a contentious political and cultural topic. The creation of India and Pakistan—which then comprised both the modern states of Pakistan and Bangladesh (the latter was known as East Pakistan until its 1971 war of independence)—was accompanied by the migration of more than seven million Hindus and Sikhs from Pakistan
