Although in the 1940s male artists were pioneers of modern art in Indonesia, several female artists have recently come to the attention of Indonesia’s contemporary art community. Old stereotypes that separate the practices of the artists (the male domain) from those of the artisans (the female domain) have started to break down. However, the patriarchal ideology that underlies many aspects of life—including art—has not completely disappeared.
