The collective depression in South Korea today is the result of a political morass rather than the global economic recession. Since assuming power in 2008, president Lee Myung-bak’s conservative government has rekindled the ghost of South Korea’s dark past, reviving memories of anti-democratic actions by previous dictators. With abrupt dismissals of top officials at government institutions, based on dubious allegations and bogus inspections, Lee’s administration has shamelessly pursued policies of political antagonism.
