Suit Against City in Bilal Case

TROY, NEW YORK — On June 9, 2009, the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) filed a federal lawsuit against the city of Troy and its public works commissioner for shutting down Iraqi-American artist Wafaa Bilal’s controversial art exhibition in early 2008. The lawsuit, the latest chapter in an ongoing dispute, alleges that city officials violated the free-speech rights of the organization that hosted Bilal’s show.
