A Pavilion Built on Tires

With the Japanese government preoccupied with post-war recovery, a wealthy industrialist secured Japan’s position at the Venice Biennale.

Fifty-five years ago, Japan almost passed up the Italian government’s invitation to construct its own national pavilion at the Venice Biennale. Today, Japan and South Korea are the only two East Asian countries with their own buildings in the Giardini della Biennale, the Venetian park crowded with architecturally eclectic buildings built during the last century as national pavilions.
