The title "All Mother Tongues Are Difficult" greeted visitors to Mounira al-Solh's exhibition at Sfeir-Semler Gallery in Beirut, creating an initial feeling of disorientation. What exactly about a mother tongue is difficult? By definition it is the language everyone speaks from birth—if anything it's natural.
