Museum Wing Two Decades in the Making
NEW DELHI — On January 19, the new wing of the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) in New Delhi was inaugurated by Sonia Gandhi, president of India’s Congress. Twenty-three years in planning and construction, the NGMA’s expansion was designed by architect AR Ramanathan, who won the original commission in 1987. Construction began 13 years later in 2000 and has taken nine years to complete following a series of lawsuits opposing the plans and shifting political support.
