For the past few years, major international institutions have discussed the idea of building a world-class museum for contemporary art in China. All the familiar names have come: the Centre Pompidou in Paris is said to be considering such a scheme; visionary Guggenheim Foundation director Thomas Krens has been mulling a Guggenheim Shanghai branch since 1996; and there are rumors involving New York's Museum of Modern Art as well as London's Tate Modern.
