With the rapid establishment of contemporary art spectacles in East and Southeast Asia over the past decade, the region can no longer claim to be under-developed in this regard. But the largely Western institutional forms— festivals, biennials, museums— that such spectacles are modeled on assume a wide and deep pool of artists and exhibitions, and require broad institutional and commercial support for emerging and mid-career artists. In many places, these preconditions have not been met.
