Guan Wei’s Perilous Journey

by Melanie Eastburn

GUAN WEIBig Mouse Kingdom, 2004, acrylic on wall, 8 x 3.8 meters.

In September 2003, after working for almost two decades within precisely defined formats— long narrow canvases, conventional office hanging files, Chinese scrolls and concertina books— Sydney-based artist Guan Wei began painting directly onto walls. A Passage to Australia (2003), Guan Wei's first wall painting, was included in "Face Up: Contemporary Art from Australia" at the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin in 2003.
