Sotheby's Indian sale in London on May 23 offered proof— where it is no longer needed— that prices for fine modern Indian paintings continue on an upward trajectory.

The modern section of the sale began with an exception, a bronze bust of the Bengali writer Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) by British sculptor Jacob Epstein, which tripled its high estimate to sell at GBP 45,600.
