Greatly influenced by Dadaism and Surrealism, Yi Sang (1910–1937) is arguably the most renowned avant-garde writer of Korea's colonial era. Yi, who was also an aspiring architect, passed away a decade before the country's historic split, yet still today, his writing is seen as representative of the modern Korean identity—fragmented, disjointed and grappling with alienation.
