Anyone who has spent time in China recently will have noticed that mirrored surfaces are an architectural obsession, covering everything from gleaming new office buildings to elevator interiors. Entire shopping malls are paved with treacherously polished marble, and new apartment floor: boards are layered with multiple coats of lacquer. In the cities, cars and buses are conspicuously new and glisten on the rare occasions when the sun shines on them…
