Makoto Aida: 

Donki-hôte

Makoto Aida is Japan's alter-Murakami. Working from similar source material as the don of contemporary Japanese art, Aida, a self-described "failed manga artist" eschews the slickly packaged Japan Pop aesthetic for a rough-hewn sensibility that disdains the corporate communality of Murakami's Kaikai Kiki talent agency in favor of his own ornery individualism. Perhaps because of this, the iconoclastic Aida has enjoyed relatively little international recognition despite his stature on the Japanese art scene.
