A Chinese Wunderkammer

Caroline Chiu's monster-scaled and chocolate-toned Polaroids of tiny scholar rocks, ritual objects and goldfish seem overly contrived in their attempt to relate an experience of intensity. The viewer is confronted with over-blown details, and becomes trapped in deep, viscous shadows. An unfocused nostalgia accompanies this unease, triggered by sepia tones, darkness and glimpses of objects associated with the Chinese past. The artist teasingly lumps these terms together into a veritable wunderkammer, referencing the defunct practice of gentlemanly collecting— the "cabinet of curiosity" that…
