Monash Gallery of Art

Tracey Moffatt

In Review

by George Alexander

Concurrent with a survey of three decades of Bill Henson's work at the National Gallery of Victoria, a retrospective of Australian photographer Tracey Moffatt, whose astonishing career continues its upward climb, was on show at the Monash Gallery of Art (MGA). Both photographers share an interest in glamour, violence, death and fluid sexuality, but while Henson evokes anonymous settings at desolate hours by drawing on highly formal and classical themes, Moffatt hijacks the conventions of popular media to reinvigorate stale forms.
