PROFILE

Framing Tyeb Mehta

by Simon Winchester

Had it not been for Fate and for the collapse of the British Raj and the Indian economy in 1947, Tyeb Mehta might have chosen a career as a film editor, or even a cinema projectionist. After all, his father worked in movie-making, his grandfather owned 11 small cinemas in and around Bombay and in later years his own children would go on to work in the purlieus of Bollywood, the lively Indian film industry.
