VARIOUS LOCATIONS — On May 23 the fiercely independent Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul won the Cannes Film Festival’s top prize, the Palme d’Or, for Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, a fantastical tale of a dying man’s visions. The work has divided critics, but its recognition is an undeniable watershed for Thai cinema.
