The towering ambitions of 1970s Japan evolve into fairy-tale ambiguity

March 15 marked the 40th anniversary of Expo ’70, the first World’s Fair ever held in Japan. Dubbed “Progress and Harmony for Mankind,” the Expo was held in Osaka and showcased over 30 cultural and technological pavilions from more than 70 countries on six continents. Expo ’70 was an affirmation of Japan’s rapid growth in the 1960s; the country had conquered the inflation, unemployment and food shortages of the postwar period.
