Incubated through clandestine gatherings during the tumultuous years of the Cultural Revolution (1966–76), the Wuming Huahui ("No Name Painting Society") lies outside of mainstream modern and contemporary Chinese art historiography. Lacking an overt engagement with politics, the work of the group's members has, for decades, evaded in-depth scholarship and formal analysis.
