The irrationally exuberant and slyly subversive new paintings by Chie Fueki are as mysterious, finely executed and impassive as Japanese Noh masks. Lavishly adorned and visually seductive, Fueki's lexicon is built around symbols culled from traditional Japanese decorative art, with particular emphasis on the chrysanthemum, an emblem of Japan since the year 325.
