The Center Of Things

Forever, it seems, there has been an ongoing debate about where the center of things lies in the arts. One hundred years ago, this idea seemed reasonable enough, when Western cultural critics of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries attempted to differentiate artistic production that emanated from learned, "civilized" communities versus that which emerged from an uneducated, "barbaric" population. But around the 1960s things began to change with social movements, such as the struggle for equal rights for minorities and women, heavy in the air in the US and Europe. By the 1990s, these
