This year, Kazakhstan is celebrating the 20th year of its independence, as are the 14 other former states of the erstwhile Soviet Union.

Of them, only a few are likely to mourn the demise of Communism and the triumph of capitalism, and Kazakhstan is certainly not one of them. It is hard to believe, but capitalism turned out to be exactly as the Soviet textbooks…
