While often stylistically compared to Magritte, the renowned Indian painter Surendran Nair adamantly rejects the Surrealist label. His paintings do not reveal a landscape of the unconscious but rather are dramatic tableaus, flatly and precisely painted like murals on human-figure-sized canvases.
