Several recent and upcoming exhibitions focusing on Japanese art of the 1950s and 1960s suggest a resurgent interest in the experimental, intermedia approaches of the Gutai art movement. “Tokyo 1955–1970: A New Avant-Garde” opens in November at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, while “Gutai: Splendid Playground,” which focuses on the Kansai-based movement’s late period, will kick off in February…
