Going commercial is the new trend among scholars and curators. And auction houses offer the most tempting seductions. Joe Earle, formerly the Keeper of the Far Eastern department at the Victoria and Albert Museum, and more recently the director of the Japan Society Gallery in New York, has joined the Japanese Art department of Bonhams. Sotheby’s boasts more scoops, including poaching Wang Tao of the School of Oriental and African Studies in London to head their Chinese Works of Art department.
