The autumn season of auctions kicked off in New York in September with the semiannual Asia Week sales. On offer twice a year are objects ranging from Chinese literati scroll paintings to Gandharan Buddhist sculptures. Christie’s and Sotheby’s also offer contemporary works from South Asia—mainly Indian and Pakistani. The biggest draw, however, continues to be the antiquities that lure bidders from around the world, but predominantly from Mainland China.
