Jompet Kuswidananto

In Jompet Kuswidananto’s ongoing installations series, “Java’s Machine” (2008– ), invisible figures appear to be wearing hybrid Dutch and Javanese military uniforms, which hang in the space. Member of his phantom troupe often brandish musical instruments or video screens, further confusing their origins in time and place. Through these conduits Kuswidananto’s work confronts Indonesia’s complex history—not only its Dutch colonial past, but also the syncretic cultural and spiritual traditions of his native Java. For his first solo show in Taipei, at Project Fulfill Art Space in August, he presented seven new videos and multimedia works…
