“Phantoms of Asia” was the most ambitious and impressive show that San Francisco’s Asian Art Museum (AAM) has mounted to date. Featuring the work of 31 living artists, it was the museum’s first large-scale contemporary exhibition. In “Phantoms,” selections from the permanent collection—known for its outstanding Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Persian and South and Southeast Asian artifacts—were masterfully interwoven with the contemporary works.
