The artist’s admiring gaze has traditionally focused on the female form, from Botticelli’s Venus to Alfred Stieglitz’s portraits of Georgia O’Keeffe. Shanghai’s Leo Xu Projects offered a provocative alternative to this historical habit with “Boy: A Contemporary Portrait.” The exhibition considered shifting definitions for being a young man in today's globalized world, through works by a diverse group of 13 artists.
