Whispering Gallery

Once upon a time, galleries opened modestly, built their reputations slowly and aged gracefully. Now, it seems they open and close like pop-up shops. Among the galleries that have decided to cut their losses early are New York’s Meulensteen (aka Max Protetch) and The Peak Suite in Hong Kong. In 2010, the former was bought by Dutchman Edwin Meulensteen—whose father is an established collector and founder of the Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum in Slovakia—after Protetch, its original owner of 40 years, decided he didn’t want to ride another recession wave.
