Shirin Neshat's emotionally confrontational images are immediately recognizable. She has captivated audiences with her highly stylized, black-and-white photographs of veiled women, covered with Farsi calligraphy, who defiantly lock eyes with the viewer.
Born in Iran, Neshat moved to the United States in 1974 to study art, after which the 1979 Islamic Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War (1980-88) broke out back home. She eventually returned to Iran
