Gajin Fujita paints as if he's marking territory. The most obvious precedent for what he does with paint and panels (not to mention gold leaf and stencils) is graffiti. Both types of mark-making stake urgent claims to shared social spaces. In the street, the signs and symbols spray-painted on walls and fences pack only as much punch as the power that lies behind their messages. Without…
