A Sarkis exhibition is an entire mise-en-scène. At Istanbul’s Galeri Manâ, which is located near both a 15th-century Armenian church and a contemporaneous Ottoman mosque, the veteran artist’s “Twin / Rainbow” was imbued with near-religious solemnity and suffused with ritual traces of Christianity, Islam and pagan spiritualism—as well as references to cultic figures of late modernism (from Joseph Beuys and Yves Klein to Arte Povera and Minimalist artists) whose heyday Sarkis’ career spans…
