In his seminal essay, “The Withdrawal of Tradition Past a Surpassing Disaster,” the Lebanese artist and writer Jalal Toufic argues that in the event of a “surpassing disaster,” such as war, along with the physical destruction of buildings, bodies and books, something less tangible—which he terms “tradition”—is also faced with an “immaterial withdrawal.”
