Bangkok-born Apichatpong Weerasethakul won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2010 for his feature Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, the first Thai filmmaker to do so. Critically acclaimed in the West for his experimental techniques and personal approach to movie-making, the artist’s work has been controversial in Thailand for its engagement with the country’s sociopolitical issues.
