Still-life photography once mimicked old-master paintings (fruit bowls, dead fowl, fallen petals), before moving on to greater complexities of allegory and abstraction in the early 20th century. Though strictly defined as depicting the inanimate object, contemporary still life allows artists to digitally orchestrate gesture, form, color and light in ways that even Man Ray could not have imagined. Despite this latitude, still-life photography too often feeds off notions of advertising or irony;
