At the time of his death on April 9, 2013, Zao Wou-ki was regarded as the most revered Chinese-born abstract artist of the 20th century. Born in Beijing in 1921, he was a prodigious painter in oil, ink and watercolor, a printmaker throughout his long career, and the subject of countless exhibitions, accolades and historical studies.
