Since starting at Bombay’s Sir JJ School of Art in 1964, I’ve carried a sketchbook, “collecting” different characters while waiting at train stations, bazaars, the hospital or the bank—this compendium of figures would then enter my paintings. In the early 1990s, I started producing monotypes…
