In February, a series of plastic tubes was slung across the Guggenheim Museum’s famous rotunda like a futuristic spider web, each tube weighed down at its center by brightly colored water. Work (Water) (1956/2011), by the late Sadamasa Motonaga, provided a focal point to “Gutai: Splendid Playground,” a retrospective of the seminal Gutai Art Association (1954–72).
